At the heart of the Panakron Agro-Tourism complex, the restaurant specializes in traditional cuisine, uses exclusively local products and is certified by the Cretan Quality Agreement.
In the lush valley of Amari, just 38 kilometers from Rethymnon, the Panakron Estate is spread over a total area of 53 sq. km and includes 5 furnished cottages, a pool, as well as basketball and volleyball courts. The restaurant offers authentic recipes from the region, and the menu changes daily, depending on the season. They source everything locally and fruit and vegetables are grown with minimal watering.
I started off slowly with home made olive bread, amarino cheese, and local olive paste washed down with organic Merenas red wine. Then the other dishes started to arrive – pickled grape hyacinth bulbs, fried snails with olive oil, rosemary and wine, aubergines with home made Xinochondros pasta, Panakron salad and, finally, pork with wild greens. If that wasn’t enough, there was a selection of deserts including lemon pie, yogurt with sweet quince and individual cheese pies with honey. An obligatory Raki and Greek coffee completed the meal.
You really feel that you’re in the heart of Crete when you dine here as you’re surrounded by the mountains and olive groves in this beautiful secluded valley. The food echoes this sentiment as the tastes are of the earth and the countryside and you begin to understand why the Cretan diet is the secret to immortality.
