Christmas honey cookies (‘melomakárona’)


6 cups flour
2 cups olive oil
1 cup icing sugar
1 cup milk
1 cup orange juice
1 tsp orange zest
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground clove
½ cup chopped walnuts
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder


2 cups water
1 cup honey
1 cup sugar



Beat the oil well together with the icing sugar. Add the zest and the orange juice into which you have mixed the baking soda, cinnamon, clove, walnuts and milk. Then slowly add the flour mixed with the baking powder to form a soft dough. Now form the melomakarona into circular or elliptical shapes and place them on an oiled baking sheet. Bake in a moderate oven for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, make the syrup as follows: Boil the water in a saucepan and add the sugar and honey. When the syrup is ready, and still warm, dunk the melomakarona into it and remove immediately with a slotted spoon. Arrange them on a plate and scatter over them a mixture of the chopped walnuts, sesame and cinnamon.
