Dried fruits
Dried fruits, such as chestnuts, walnuts, almonds and peanuts were frequently consumed within the framework of the Cretan diet. The consumption of dried fruits has a lot of benefits for our health. (Sabate & Ang 2009). It is now known that regular consumption of dried fruits prevents the occurrence of coronary disease and improves blood lipid levels. Recent studies suggest, however, that it may also be related to other beneficial effects as well. Regular consumption of dried fruits may reduce the risk of diabetes in women, while for men there aren’t any available data at present. In both genders it appears to reduce the possibility of cholelithiasis, while, over time, regular consumption is connected with lower body weight and reduced risk of obesity. Finally, at present, there are data which suggest that in women the consumption of dried fruits also has beneficial effects against cancer.
